Children’s book writer Matthijs Meeuwsen dives into the world of slime

On 18 September, children’s book writer Matthijs Meeuwsen visited our research group at Radboudumc to immerse himself in the fascinating world of slime, and to explore how our research might be translated into a story for young readers.

We took Matthijs on a journey through our research, starting where many of our studies begin: with children in the hospital and the collection of nasal and saliva samples. From there, he followed the samples into the laboratory, looking at respiratory epithelial cells under the microscope and learning how samples are processed and stored.

Finally, we zoomed in even further to explore one of the main interests of our group: antibodies at the mucosal surface and their role in protecting us against respiratory infections.

Along the way, Matthijs met different members of our team and experienced how research moves from a clinical question to samples, experiments, data and, ultimately, new insights into respiratory health and disease.

We very much enjoyed showing Matthijs our world of slime and are excited to see where his curiosity and creativity will take it. Stay tuned!
